Building Capacity

PRA training
Personnel have been trained in the use of the WWF/WB Management Effectiveness Tracking Tool (METT). This technique has subsequently been applied to each area in Guassa and Abune-Yoseph in Nov 2009 (Report held in Addis). Project personnel have adapted the METT process to improve its local applicability and training in its use is ongoing for partner and community members.
At a four day training course (January 2010), a Field Guide and Participatory Rural Assessment training material was produced for use in extending the PRA approach across the study areas This was attended by project partners; 4 community liaison officers (CLO) and 3 government development agents. The CLO then provided training for 8 local government field staff in Bale who used the technique to undertake communal forest status baseline surveys with community members. This baseline assessment will be used later for preparing a participatory management plan for the village forests.

Practical training for monitoring team
A 3-day capacity building workshop on “Afro-Montane Ecosystem Monitoring in Ethiopia” was held in Addis Ababa in March 2009. Attendees included both NRM experts and representatives of Ethiopian institutions. The workshop developed ecological monitoring plans for key Afro-montane areas in Ethiopia including the development of effective and efficient monitoring protocols. (Workshop agenda and participant list)
Training in database design, set-up and operation was provided for five project and partner staff in March 2010 in Bale Mountain target areas. Next steps are to establish databases in each of these project sites.
A one week management skills training course was provided for five project and partner staff in Dec 2009.
