The James Hutton Institute logoThe Macaulay Land Use Research Institute and SCRI joined forces on 1 April 2011 to create The James Hutton Institute. It is the first Institute of its type in Europe and will make major, new contributions to the understanding of key global issues such as food, energy and environmental security.

The staff of the Administration Group support the work of the Institute. The group is made up of the following sections:

Business Development Unit

The role of the Unit is to:

  • Lead the development of a funding strategy that encompasses both research and commercial projects,
  • Develop systems to assist in the sourcing, bidding and effective management of external funding,
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the Corporate Strategies and Business Plans of the Group
  • Identify and engage with new research funding sources,
  • Identify opportunities to develop and capitalise on intellectual property and scientific expertise.

The Unit’s role cuts across all of the Institute’s project implementation and support activities.

The Communication Services team supports the Institute’s activities relating to external communications, public relations, event management, website development, graphics and photography.

Finance

The finance department deals with all monetary issues relating to the Institute, such as the payment of salaries and invoices, the processing of travel and subsistence claims, and the management, maintenance and development of accounting ledgers.

 

Health and Safety

The Health and Safety Manager provides advice and guidance necessary to support the research activities of the Institute, and also manages the arrangements to ensure compliance with the Health and Safety Regulations.

 

HR and Training Development

Hands filing in filing cabinetThe Human Resources and Training and Development team provide support for all staff, students and visitors to the Institute. It ensures good HR practice is adhered to, aims to cascade professional standards throughout the Institute and ensures that equality and dignity at work is maintained. Its' combined remit, includes provision of recruitment and selection services, management of the contractual terms and conditions, pay and benefits and staff promotion / grade evaluation, staff support. Staff are also supported in their roles through management of their performance, provision of leadership and management opportunities, in addition to programmes of personal development and specialised training.

Library and Information Services

Book being read in libraryThe Library reflects the Institute's research interests with comprehensive collections of books and journals in agriculture, botany, chemistry, geology, mineralogy, plant and soil sciences. Over 1000 journal titles are held, of which approximately 150 are current subscriptions. In addition, the library provides staff with access to key electronic journal services.

Technical Services

The Technical Services section provides technical support to the Institute's research programme by designing, constructing and maintaining scientific equipment as well as maintaining the buildings’ services such as heating, ventilation, plumbing system and electrical installation.
