The IT Services group provides a comprehensive range of high quality and managed computing and communication facilities to the Institute. These facilities together with direct support and advice contribute to the successful delivery of the Institute’s research portfolio, consultancy services, and knowledge exchange initiatives.
All facilities are managed by an in-house team of specialists, and include:
- The provision of centrally managed but flexible desktop and laptop personal computing, plus platforms for research and specialist work including Linux and MacOS operating environments.
- Services for mobile workers including secure extranet provision, remote access to network storage, file synchronisation technology, and a web-based collaboration platform. Mobile workers can also opt for a Blackberry handheld device integrated with our corporate email and calendar system.
- Data communications via wired and wireless networks, and telecommunications utilising modern IP Telephony technology.
- Clustered servers and a Storage Area Network to provide fast, scalable, and reliable access to networked storage and applications.
- A research network based on Unix servers to support computationally intensive work and specialist projects.
- Databases and the development of interfaces to provide dynamic access to administrative and scientific datasets.
- The Macaulay Institute web presence, hosted sites for partner projects, and an intranet which are continually evolving to exploit the latest generations of interactive web technologies.
- A user support Helpdesk service to satisfy requests and resolve problems related to the central facilities, and to provide general assistance with computing issues.
