Introduction

Red squirrel picWe make every effort to make the results of our research on biodiversity available to those who will find them useful.

In recent years the most common way of doing this has been through the creation of computer modeling tools that allow land managers to assess the ecological and production consequences of alternative land management options.

Specific examples relate to the management of wild and domestic animals in open hill situations. These include:

DeerMAP - (Deer Movement and Abundance Predictor). Deer move in response to many factors, including changes in vegetation, weather conditions and human disturbance. We have developed DeerMAP, a computer model, to help land managers anticipate where deer are most likely to go.

Hillplan - a decision support tool for land managers which forecasts the changes in vegetation under a range of livestock management and heather-burning strategies.
