The workshop was hosted by the institute's director, Dr Dimitris Katsaros.                                  

The Institute belongs to the National Agricultural Research Foundation (NAGREF), which is supervised by the Greek Ministry of Agriculture. The institute was set up in 1996and currently employs six members of staff, including four research scientists specialising in Rural Development, Geography, Agricultural Economics and Rural Tourism. Future plans include increasing the scientific staff to 15. Karpenisi is the capital of the Evritania prefecture, one hundred percent of which is classed as mountainous. Karpenisi is located approximately 300km north-west of Athens.
