MISCELLANEOUS CATEGORIES

Built Up Areas are urban areas or 'built-up' land and is represented by houses and other buildings including areas of playing fields, parks, golf courses etc. Included within this category are: Airfields, both in current use and abandoned, occurring either in the countryside or contiguous with built-up areas; Factories include features such as sawmills, distilleries or defence establishments within a rural setting; Recreational land which includes wildlife parks, caravan sites and other recreational features; Road and rail infrastructure which largely consists of motorway intersections, large roundabouts and rail sidings and marshalling yards.

Soils also provide the foundation for the built environment.
