There are a number of categories of land cover that have been put together
in the miscellaneous category. Possibly the two
most important ones are inland
waters and
built up areas. The mapped distribution of
these features is
included in these web pages;

Built Up Areas are urban areas or 'built-up' land and is represented by
houses and other buildings including areas of playing fields, parks, golf
courses etc. Included within this category are: Airfields, both in current use
and abandoned, occurring either in the countryside or contiguous with built-up
areas; Factories include features such as sawmills, distilleries or defence
establishments within a rural setting; Recreational land which includes
wildlife parks, caravan sites and other recreational features; Road and rail
infrastructure which largely consists of motorway intersections, large
roundabouts and rail sidings and marshalling yards. |
