SOIL ASSOCIATIONS -
 TORRIDON

DERIVATION:

Pre-Cambrian rocks of the Torridonian Formation.

TYPES OF PARENT MATERIALS MAPPED:

Morainic deposits
Glacial till
Glacial drift
Stony colluvial deposits
Cryogenic deposits

COLOUR:

Reddish and pinkish till.

TEXTURE:

Till deposits are generally sandy silt loam with coarser textured (loamy sand) morainic material. Moderate stone content.

DOMINANT LAND USE:

Generally rough grazing with some forestry.

LANDFORMS:

Highly variable with morainic mounds within valley bottoms and lower valley sides and rugged valley terrain. Intermediate hill slopes, stepped or ridged with gentle or locally steep slopes.

SOIL CHEMISTRY:

Inherently acidic with low amounts of basic cations. Trace elements are generally low.

SOIL PHYSICAL PROPERTIES:

Potential rooting depth around 60cm with induration and/or rock acting as distinct barrier.
Weak structure development in subsoil.
