Geology:
alluvial deposits and saltings.
Landforms:
found in low lying areas around lochs, between fluvioglacial mounds, along rivers and on raised beaches. Also saltings and dune slacks.
Soils:
poorly drained alluvial soils and mineral ground water gleys (wetness class IV). Saline alluvial soils below the high-water mark which are periodically inundated by the sea.
Vegetation:
varies from the halophytic marsh species of the saltings, rush pastures, and sedge mires to permanent pasture and intensive agriculture where the level of the water table can be controlled.
