European legislation protects the machair habitat and a number of breeding birds that use the machair.
Many machair areas are Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) and machair forms substantial parts of two National Nature Reserves.
Parts of the machair are protected for their landscape value as National Scenic Areas.
The machair is also a priority habitat in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan.
