Aberdeen Business School, RGU, Garthdee as part of Techfest 2009

Due to popular demand, The Macaulay Land Use Research Institute once again delved into the science behind fictional crime when it presented 'Murder, Mystery and Microscopes' as part of Techfest 2009.

Crime fiction came face to face with science fact on the evening of 26 September as the fictional forensics of crime writer Stuart MacBride were put under the microscope by a group of real-life CSIs.

Separating crime fiction from crime fact were:

Forensics expert Professor Dave Barclay from The Robert Gordon University,

Dr Lorna Dawson, Head of Soil Forensic Science at the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute,

Dr James Grieve, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Pathology at the University of Aberdeen and a Police Forensic Pathologist.

Stuart MacBride read out excerpts from his own Logan McRae crime novels, whilst the forensic experts were on hand to reveal all about the science behind these stories.

Before the event, Dr Lorna Dawson, Head of Soil Forensics at the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute explained: "The 'Murder, Mystery and Microscopes' event aims to inform and entertain people about the science behind fictional crime, by bringing together crime authors and forensic experts. We hope to provoke some captivating conversations, intrigue, amuse and enlighten everyone who attends."

Hosted by Original 106 FM presenter, Damien McLeod, the event closed with a book signing and an opportunity for the audience to question both the author and the scientists.

Murder, Mystery & Microscopes was an un-missable evening for fans of crime fiction and crime dramas.
