  • Seminar by Annelie Holzkaemper: "Investigating impacts of climate change on Swiss agriculture using climate indices and crop models"

1pm, Macaulay Land Use Research Institute, Aberdeen

Future climate change may increase drought risks in the Swiss Central Plateau. This trend is likely to increase agricultural production risks by the end of the century. In order to identify needs for adaptations and new potentials, impacts of climate projections on crop production have to be quantified at the local and regional scale. We apply climate indices and the crop model CropSyst for such investigations. Two ongoing studies will be presented: in one we develop an approach for a climate suitability mapping for Swiss agriculture using phenophase-specific agroclimatic indices; in the other we apply crop models in combination with a spatial optimization routine to investigate optimum adaptation strategies for agricultural water management.

  • Beauty and the Bog: Artist Talk

Artist Carol Taylor is currently in collaborations with scientists who 'explore and 'explain' the world of plants. She will talk about working with scientists and about the techniques she uses to translate scientific research into art, such as digital photography of dissected plant specimens taken through a scanning electron microscope, wood engraving, drawings and paintings which sometimes have dried plant specimens incorporated into the image.

Joining her will be Dr Rebekka Artz from Aberdeen's Macaulay Land Use Research Institute who will be discussing her work on peat bogs which inspired some of Carol's work.

The talks will take place from 7pm to 9pm and drinks and nibbles will be provided. This will be a great chance to find out more about the artists work and ask questions. They promise to give a fascinating insight into the artistic process and will appeal to artists and non-artists alike.
