Field of potatoesBased on knowledge of soil functions, the research will lead to informed policy and practical guidance on the sustainable management, conservation and restoration of soils for a range of land-uses.

This will cover both present and future environmental conditions, focussed by an understanding of the ecological, economic and social value of soils.

The research in this area complements our work on Assessing Soil Quality and will provide evidence from both social and biophysical sciences on the sustainable management of soil in Scotland that can be used by policy makers within the Scottish Government, government agencies (Scottish Environment Protection Agency, SEPA and Scottish Natural Heritage, SNH) and by land managers and other scientists.

The work relates to a number of policies, codes of practice and voluntary initiatives including the Water Framework Directive (WFD), implementation of cross-compliance measures to the Good Agricultural and Environmental Condition (GAEC) requirements within the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reform measures, the SEERAD Prevention of Environmental Pollution From Farming Activities (PEPFFA) code and the Soils Action Plan.
