Assessing Soil Quality
To allow us to predict the risks facing our soils, we need to clearly understand how each of the individual aspects of soil health respond to different pressures, and define useful thresholds beyond which soil function is impaired.
Knowing how soil properties change between areas or over time is also essential for understanding the response of soils to these threats.
There is evidence from current work that Scottish soils exhibit particular sensitivities when compared to other UK soils.
Our work in this area revolves around four main themes based on the scientific challenges of protecting the nation’s soils.
