Prof David Miller

David Miller has a BSc in Topographic Science from University of Glasgow, and a PhD on expert systems from the University of Aberdeen. He has worked at MLURI (formerly The Macaulay Institute for Soil Research) since 1984, currently as Leader of the Integrated Land Use Systems Group. He has worked on techniques for handling and analysing geographic information and applying them to mapping, monitoring and modelling changes in peat, land cover, land use and landscape (including urban land use), and the development of Geographic Information Systems for use by government and its agencies.

Research Interests

He is responsible for co-ordination of research and commercial projects relating to landscape and spatial modelling, including applications in renewable energy and forensic investigations. David is a member of the Steering Group of the Aberdeen City Land Use Forum, the Planning/Academia Liaison Group of Aberdeenshire Council, and the Research Degrees Committee of Robert Gordon University. He has an honorary post at Heriot Watt University in the OPENSpace Research Centre. David also undertakes a significant role in the knowledge exchange programme of the Institute, leading work with the Virtual Landscape Theatre to facilitate participation and engagement of the public and stakeholders on issues of change is landscape and communities, and knowledge exchange on issues relating to urban and rural pressures for land use change amongst the general public and schools.
