Our work will respond to the requirements for river basin management set out in the Water Framework Directive (WFD).
This EU directive, which came into force in 2000, is enacted in the Water Environment Act in Scotland, and supersedes some previous legislation on waters, particularly the Freshwater Fish Directive, the Shellfish Water Directive and the Dangerous Substances Directive.
The WFD has overlap with, and is intended to complement, a number of other pieces of legislation. These include the Urban Waster Water Treatment Directive (UWWTD), the Nitrates Directive (ND), the Bathing Water Directive (BWD), and the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) Directive.
It links to the Control of Pollution Act 1974 (COPA) as well as EU directives on the protection of birds and habitats
In addition, we will assess how river basin management may affect, and be affected by, other legislation such as the reformed Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).
