The Institute has particular expertise in research in support of land use policy and rural development, particularly in marginal and remote areas. It also has a long history of developing decision support tools to aid the formulation of land use policy and natural resource management. Staff are currently working on projects in South America , Africa , Central Asia , South and South-East Asia and China , as well as most EU countries.

African Technology Policy Studies NetworkThe African Technology Policy Studies Network (ATPS) is a multi-disciplinary network of researchers, policy makers, the private sector and civil society interested in generating, promoting, and strengthening innovative policies on issues of science and technology in Africa . ATPS is unique in that it operates through chapters in 23 countries across sub-Saharan Africa . Furthermore, the ATPS reach is not limited to member countries. ATPS’ main strength lies in its ability not only to generate knowledge, but to broker knowledge sharing across the continent and the rest of the world. Current work on Water and Environment is being carried out through the ATPS Programme on Water and Environment which has serious implications for food security, environmental health and common pool resource-use conflicts in Africa , all of which are prerequisite for growth and poverty reduction. The programme included on-going primary research on irrigation externalities, water pollution and sustainable water supply for improved livelihoods in ATPS member countries. Part of its broad aims is to promote knowledge sharing and inter-disciplinarity through joint research and training, and deliberative workshops between African researchers, relevant government institutions and responsible water management authorities and international researchers / institutions involved in sustainable water catchments management.
