The Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Initiative (TERI) was established to avoid duplication of research concerning future changes and impacts under a variety of scenarios of environmental change. This umbrella organisation encompasses most major European ecosystems, and incorporates a high number of sites organised along transects covering European environmental gradients. This EC initiative differs substantially from previous research efforts of this kind in that it is an integrated approach to system functioning and dynamics. TERI is basically driven by the strong concern of integrating studies at higher biological, spatial and temporal scales.
