Funding for Scottish science projects

The Macauay Land Use Research Institute has received a share of £650,000 from the Scottish Government's Science Engagement Scheme, for the Murder, Mystery and Microscopes project.
Designed to make science more accessible to the public, the funding was announced in August by the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, Fiona Hyslop who said, "The science engagement scheme is designed to complement more formal learning for science and inspire more Scots, particularly our young people, to take an active scientific interest in the world in which they live.
"It gives members of the public - from pre-school children to adults - the chance to meet scientists involved in a range of pioneering work, learn about how science impacts on their every day lives and get involved in a range of fun but educational activities and workshops”.

Scottish river water quality atlas has been created

Under a joint initiative between SEPA and the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute a water quality atlas for Scottish rivers has been produced.
Amongst its many monitoring activities, SEPA monitors water quality in 56 large rivers across Scotland under the Harmonised Monitoring Scheme, an international monitoring strategy examining river-borne inputs to seas.
These rivers have been monitored since the mid-1970s and provide an invaluable record of environmental change in Scotland.
Analysis of trends in these records supports two main conclusions:
- Climate change is already having an effect on Scottish rivers, with water temperature increasing in rivers across Scotland and river flow increasing in some places.
- Stewardship of Scotland’s water environment is working and improvements in water quality have been delivered through environmental regulation, cleaner technologies, improved sewage treatment and changes in agricultural practise.
Under a joint initiative between SEPA and the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute a water quality atlas for Scottish rivers has been produced. Highlights are currently available on the SEPA website, and the full atlas will be available electronically in the autumn of 2009.
Tickets go on sale for Murder, Mystery and Microscopes Event

Due to popular demand, The Macaulay Land Use Research Institute will once again delve into the science behind fictional crime when it presents 'Murder, Mystery and Microscopes' as part of Techfest 2009.
Crime fiction will come face to face with science fact on the evening of 26 September as the fictional forensics of crime writer Stuart MacBride will be put under the microscope by a group of real-life CSIs.
Tickets are priced £5.00 adult and £4.00 concession (plus booking fee). To book, contact Jane Morrice on 01224 395277.
The event will be held at Aberdeen Business School, Robert Gordon University, Garthdee and is unsuitable for under 16s.
